Art History

About the Collections

Originating from a wide variety of geographic regions and time periods, our visual artwork holdings contain unique, ephemeral materials of enduring value. The collections include original drawings and paintings recording eyewitness experiences of World War I, World War II, and other conflicts, as well as many political cartoons and caricatures. Material from our extensive Poster Collection is also featured in this guide, highlighting works that exhibit distinctive graphic design and illustration. Other mediums found in the collections include woodblock prints, lithographs, illuminated books, and more. The majority of the materials featured in this guide have been digitized and can be viewed online at our two digital repositories, Digital Collections 1 and Digital Collections 2.
