Afghanistan

These collections focus on political, social, and economic conditions in Afghanistan in the modern period. Particularly well documented are the Soviet invasion, the civil war of 1992, and US military operations during the war in Afghanistan beginning in 2001. Other topics include US economic assistance and development of education.

The majority of the collections on Algeria concern the history of French colonialism and the long struggle that resulted in Algerian independence in 1962. Egypt

These collections primarily concern Egyptian political and social movements, including the communist movement, the election of Gamal Abdel Nasser, and conflicts surrounding the Suez Canal. The papers of Egyptian diplomat and former United Nations secretary-general Boutros Boutros-Ghali document, in part, his experience negotiating the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Early publications of the Muslim Brotherhood are also available.

Iran

The Iranian collections include significant holdings on Iranian communism and communist parties, the Pahlavi dynasty, the Islamic revolution and establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, US relations with Iran, the Iran-Iraq war, and Shi'ism and Iranian politics. Included is one of the largest collections of Iranian political opposition materials in the United States.

Iraq

The political and social conditions in Iraq under Saddam Hussein from 1968 to 2003 and the US military occupation of Iraq in 2003 are well documented. Records of the Ba'ath Arab Socialist Party of Iraq, with more than ten million digitized pages and one hundred video files, are one of the largest digital collections in the archives.

Israel / Palestine

The collections on Israel and Palestine address aspects of a combined and contentious history as well as the separate histories of Israelis and Palestinians. Some pertain to Zionist activities during the British mandate in Palestine; others, to the creation of Israel, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, and the 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. The status of Palestinians under Israeli rule and the general Israel/Palestine conflict are also covered.
