Latin America and the Caribbean Collections at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives

Argentina

The Argentine collections contain the extensive correspondence of Juan Domingo Peron during his years of exile, as well as the papers of several leading Peronists and socialists. Those are complemented by a major radical newspaper and pamphlet collection for the period 1899–1986, as well as by numerous papers relating to US diplomats and various leaders of labor and Trotskyist organizations.

Bolivia

The Bolivian collections center on the modern period. They include the papers of trade unionist and politician Juan Lechín Oquendo and the collection of Elisabeth Burgos-Debray, which includes documentation on the trial of Régis Debray, a French writer accused of participating in the guerrilla campaign of Che Guevara in Bolivia in 1966–67. Other collections concern agricultural and educational assistance provided by the United States.

Brazil

Focusing on the 1930–95 period, the Brazilian collections relate to economic and political conditions and  the activities of various US and other foreign diplomats in the country. Several collections pertain to Brazil during World War II; others document the era of military rule in the 1960s and early 1970s. A few collections concern foreign investment and economic development in the modern era.

Chile

The Chilean collections spotlight political and social conditions during the past four decades, particularly the period framed by the 1970 election of socialist Salvador Allende and the subsequent period (1973–93) of military rule under Augusto Pinochet. For the Pinochet era, collections concern human rights issues and free-market policies introduced to Chile. Other collections document relations between the United States and Chile in the 1970s and 1980s.

Colombia

The Colombian collections largely concern political conditions. Several contain materials on the Colombian civil war and prolonged guerrilla insurgencies. Others relate to various topics, including social and economic policy planning, political campaigns, and the history of the Chinese émigré community in that country.

Cuba

Most of the Cuban collections concern the 1959 Cuban revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power and the subsequent years of Castro's rule. Many document economic, social, and political conditions; others pertain to the situation of Cuban refugees in the United States and the anti-Castro activities of Cuban exile organizations. A few collections deal with the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

Dominican Republic

The collections about the Dominican Republic center on US military interventions in the country, first in 1916 and again in 1965, and contain correspondence, interviews, and reports. The Theodore Draper Papers include printed matter relating to the political crisis immediately before the 1965 US intervention.

The Guatemalan collections highlight political developments and social conditions. Several contain materials on the civil war from 1960 to 1996, including one (Burgos-Debray Papers) with extensive documentation on the life of the prominent Indian activist Rigoberta Menchú. The Jean Meadowcroft Papers are in part concerned with US educational assistance to Guatemala.

Haiti

These collections contain significant materials on politics and Haiti's relationship with the United States. Several collections focus on the US presence in Haiti, including the 1915 military intervention that led to a prolonged occupation by US troops. Other collections relate to politics, education, and human rights in Haiti during the dictatorships of François Duvalier and his successor, Jean-Claude Duvalier.

The collections span nearly a century, from the Mexican revolution period to the contemporary era. Some relate to US military intervention during the revolution. Others concern the history of Mexican radicalism, focusing on the Mexican Communist Party, various Mexican Trotskyist organizations, and the 1968 student protest movement. Several collections contain materials on modern art in Mexico in the first half of the twentieth century.

Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan collections are one of the largest Latin American resources in the archives. The majority concern the Sandinista government in the 1980s and the contra movement that waged war against the Sandinistas. Included are papers of Sandinista officials, materials documenting censorship of the opposition newspaper La Prensa, and records relating to the contra organization, Resistencia Nicaragüense.

Panama

Many of the Panamanian collections concern relations between the United States and Panama, particularly US control of the Panama Canal. Others relate to the authoritarian rule of Manuel Noriega, the 1989 US invasion that led to his capture, and his subsequent trial in the United States. A few collections contain general materials on Panamanian politics.

Peru

The Peruvian collections cover the time span from World War I  to the modern era. Several  have materials concerning the Tacna-Arrica territorial dispute between Peru and Chile. Others deal with international agricultural and education assistance programs in Peru. One pertains to the Communist Party of Peru; another relates to the Maoist guerrilla organization Sendero Luminoso.
