Search Tips

The Online Archive of California (OAC) is the main portal for searching all our archival collections.

► A search on OAC will bring up a list of relevant collections.

► A click on a collection title will bring you to the finding aid of this collection. A finding aid usually includes a collection description and an inventory.

► On the finding aid page, highlights and arrows will lead you to each instance in the finding aid where the search term is found.

► Depending on the level of description of a collection, finding aids can be very detailed or very brief. Naturally, there will be fewer hits in brief finding aids.

SearchWorks is Stanford's library catalog and the main portal for searching our library collection. Use SearchWorks if you are looking for Library materials. Note, however:

► SearchWorks allows you to search the collections of all Stanford Libraries, or to narrow down your search to the collection of a particular library--e.g., the Hoover Institution Library.

► On SearchWorks, you can also narrow down your search to "Hoover Institution Archives," since SearchWorks lists records for all our archival collections as well, which include brief descriptions and link to the collections' main finding aids on OAC.

► While SearchWorks contains many catalog entries for individual parts of the Hoover Institution Library's separate Pamphlet Collection, the general, searchable finding aid for this collection can be found on OAC.

Keyword searches: For a wide range of search results, consider trying one-word searches first. Be sure to try alternate spellings of names and search terms. If you enter several search terms, only results where all these search terms appear will be shown.

If you you find a result that is particularly relevant, take a look at the subject terms assigned to it and try performing another search using the applicable subject term(s) to find related or similar items.

If you want to perform a broad search, you can also start with a blank search field and then narrow down the list of all records shown by selecting subject terms, time periods, languages, or other criteria.
