Asia Collections at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives

China

Hoover’s many Chinese collections document political, economic, and social developments during the revolution of 1911, the warlord period, the civil war, and the post-1949 period. Holdings on pre-1949 Republican China, including Nationalist government documents and Chinese Communist Party materials, are particularly robust. Also available are accounts of non-Chinese public servants, military officers, engineers, journalists, and scholars who shaped or witnessed developments in China.

Hong Kong

Many of our numerous Hong Kong collections concentrate on the social, political, and economic conditions of the Pearl River Delta region from 1841 to 1997. Others concern negotiations and plans for the transfer of the colony from administration by the British to Chinese sovereignty.

Japan and Japanese Diaspora

Our many Japan and Japanese Diaspora collections focus on social, political, and economic change from the Meiji (1868–1911) to post–World War II reconstruction (1945–52) periods in Japan and overseas Japanese communities. Major topics of the Japan collection include the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95; pre–World War II domestic affairs; Japanese-sponsored governments in China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia; the post–World War II Allied occupation, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, the US-Japan Security Treaty. Records of the Japanese Communist Party and proceedings of the Imperial Diet, 1890–1946, are available. The Japanese Diaspora collection includes the HOJI SHINBUN DIGITAL COLLECTION, the world’s largest open-access full-image digital collection of Japanese newspapers published in North America.

Mongolia

Most of the Hoover Archives’ holdings on Mongolia concern the years 1920-1921, when Baron Roman Ungern-Shternberg attempted to use the country as a base from which to combat Bolshevism. The Hoover Library and Archives also holds minutes and protocols of the assemblies of the Mongolian Peoples’ Party and Mongolian People’s Republic in the 1920s and 1930s, reports from an American visitor to Mongolia in the 1930s on political and economic conditions there, as well as issuances of the Mongolian Social Democratic Party from 1990.

North and South Korea

More than five hundred publications and collections document social, political, and economic changes in North and South Korea, dating especially from the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910 to the Korean War. They include the records of the Japanese legation in Seoul (1894­–1910), psychological warfare leaflets distributed by the United Nations during the Korean War, and records of the United States Army Military Government in Korea.

Taiwan

A considerable portion of the Taiwan collections are from the Chinese Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT), and KMT officials active between the 1970s and 2000s, when democratization and economic development policies were shaped. Also available are campaign materials of the Democratic Progressive Party, in power from 2000 to 2008, and English-language materials by and about Westerners and foreign entities who engaged with Taiwan around VJ Day.
