Africa Collections at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives

Algeria

The majority of the collections on Algeria concern the history of French colonialism and the long struggle that resulted in Algerian independence in 1962. Materials in the collections relate to the Algerian war, especially the French side of the conflict. Other collections pertain to the early years of French rule and post independence conditions.

Egypt

These collections primarily concern Egyptian political and social movements, including the communist movement, the election of Gamal Abdel Nasser, and conflicts surrounding the Suez Canal. The papers of Egyptian diplomat and former United Nations secretary-general Boutros Boutros-Ghali document, in part, his experience negotiating the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Early publications of the Muslim Brotherhood are also available.

Eritrea

The collections of Thomas Hubbard Vail Motter and Earnest Albertson cover their service at former US bases in Eritrea. Independence movements are documented in the Jack Kramer Papers, which focus on the Eritrean Liberation Front; a related collection contains sound recordings of revolutionary songs of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. Various materials also cover the post-1991 independence period.

South Africa

Holdings on South Africa and its surrounding region are robust. Strengths include the colonial period, the rise of apartheid and development of black "homelands," the antiapartheid movement, and the immediate postapartheid political and social transition. Government documents, especially commission reports, and publications of nationalist groups (the ANC, FRELIMO, SWAPO, etc.), both legal and underground, are well represented. Photographs, posters, and audiovisual materials are also noteworthy.
